SHADOWS OF DESTINY: A TALE OF LOST KIN

 SHE RAN AWAY… Part 1

Khushi seemed to enjoy the joyous laughter of cheerful children playing outside while singing in her beautiful voice, the same song that her mother used to sing her when she was 2!

She was cleaning the dirty utensils while losing herself in the chore. Still, sometimes she also wanted to play like others her age, but how could she when she had so much work to do? and besides, Mrs Karen would be really angry if she didn’t finish the chores on time or would even beat her as well. Only sometimes, when nobody was looking, she would walk up to the kitchen window to look at the beaming faces of kids, she would smile looking at them, but as soon as she heard someone coming, she would run back to her work and lower her gaze.

Khushi was her name. She was a pure soul and a little child still she had no childhood, she was always tortured by her stepmother while her step-father didn’t care at all! Mr. Amir discovered her in a forest near a wolf’s enclosure and brought her home, captivated by her looks. She had a fairy-like appearance with crystal blue eyes, the fairy was not only in her looks but also in her demeanour.

12 years was her age. It seemed like she was a child, well she was but she didn’t have any childhood. Her whole day went doing work for Mrs Karen. One day, Mr. Amir got two beautiful parrots in a big cage. Mrs Karen loved birds and so her husband got the two parrots for her, they were very expensive though!

The cage was hung near the window pane, Khushi had two new friends now.

She was in love with the parrots, and every day while doing the house chores, she would talk to them, “You two are also caged like me…” she said while smiling painfully but suddenly the two parrots were banging the cage violently, Khushi was not able to understand the sudden change in their behaviour but soon she understood their emotions as she gazed at the birds flying freely in the sky, “I will be caged here for forever now, but I can at least help my two new friends!” she thought as she climbed on the chair and opened the door of the cage. As soon as she opened it, she heard a furious shout from behind, it was Mrs Karen, she tried to catch the parrots but it was too late, the parrots were already flying in the sky with the other birds, probably enjoying their freedom right now.

Mrs Karen was furious, she turned towards Khushi and gave her a tight slap, “YOU! DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH THOSE COST!!?” She was beating Khushi mercilessly, she gave one last kick and said, “You are just a burden, useless creature!”

She had no energy left in her body, still, she stood up, holding her stomach, she knew that is she stayed then her step-mother won’t leave her alive, she ran away from her house, technically it would be better if I said a living hell rather than home…”

she was walking like a body without any soul. She was in her deep thought when suddenly someone pushed her hard and she fell at some distance, she looked up at the person who pushed her, it was a boy, probably double her age looking at her as if she had eaten his favourite food, she was about to shout at him, although she didn’t have that kind of energy before she could react, the boy said, “watch where you’re going from next time, you won’t be saved like this every time, little girl…” He then walked away, patting her head gently, though it was strange to see a child in the middle of the road at this hour, all by herself, but Liam just ignored his thoughts and got lost in the rhythm of the music which he was listening to. She wasn’t thankful at all for what the boy did because she rather wished to die than to live in the cruel world where people had no sympathy for kids, her eyes were emotionless though she wanted to cry out loud to let out all of her pain which she had it within for all those years. She ran away from the hell which she believed to be her home and now she had no idea where to go because she had no one left in this world, she believed that her parents were dead as she was living with Mr Amir and Mrs Karen for as long as she remembers, she only had one last memory of her mother, the beautiful song, which her mother used to sing her, it wasn’t a lullaby though, and don’t ask me how could she remember that, she was only 2, well let’s just say that when God wishes, there is no logic in things, only magic!

Khushi hurried past the dim alley, eager to avoid the darkness which made her as uneasy as her disdain for Mrs Karen. However, her attention was caught by a piercing scream, likely from a man. Although fearful, her curious nature drew her towards the source of the sound. She reasoned that a quick glance wouldn’t hurt, and approached the area cautiously. Hiding behind a large pillar, her mind went blank as she laid eyes on the scene before her…

She spotted a motionless figure on the ground – a man who appeared to be of a similar age to Mr Amir. Though his face was familiar, she couldn’t recall much about him beyond seeing him on television. Lost in thought about the news story featuring the same man, she was startled by a composed yet forceful voice asking, “What brings you here at this hour, young lady?” As she spun around, her heart raced as if it might burst from her chest. There stood a tall, imposing man with a sturdy frame that intimidated her, yet she tried to respond calmly. “I was just walking by,” she murmured. The man’s piercing gaze seemed to search her for any hidden motive as he interrogated her. “Do you have your parents with you?”

Khushi’s head shook, and she looked scared. She had no wish to be associated with the man before her, who loomed over her intimidatingly. Fear enveloped her, causing her to shiver and tremble. Her mind became a never-ending reel of vivid and haunting memories that felt like a sinister movie playing over and over. She couldn’t ignore the fact that her life had been a living hell, devoid of love, and well truly dark. She whispered to herself a sad song that lamented her unjust existence. Unconsciously, her tears flowed out, painting her cheeks with a streak of sadness and pain.

With each second, her feelings intensified, and she was engulfed in a torrent of anguish. Every part of her being was consumed by the panic attack that she couldn’t control. Her sadness, pain, and suffering had intensified, and she had no one to turn to for comfort.

The tall and muscular man in front of her was desperate to calm Khushi down, but his efforts were in vain. Despite his attempts to ease her distress, the weight of her situation was too much to bear, and she collapsed into his arms, losing consciousness. His empathy was palpable as he held her, weighed down by the enormity of her suffering.

He realized he needed to act fast to help her, and so he gently lifted her motionless body and carried her to his car. His heart ached as he thought about the terrible things she had experienced, and he resolved to provide a safe and secure place for her to recover.

They arrived at his magnificent mansion, a haven where he sought solace and peace. Without hesitation, he reached out to a trusted friend, someone like a brother, urgently explaining the gravity of the situation. Worry and urgency filled his voice as he pleaded, “Please, come as quickly as you can. We have a patient in desperate need.”

As his friend declined the call, his eyes settled upon Khushi’s face, a picture of profound sorrow. Her delicate features bore a heavy burden of sadness and despair. Traces of dried tears adorned her cheeks, emphasizing the depth of her anguish. Despite the weariness and desolation, a flicker of innocence remained, a mesmerizing beauty that shone even amidst the darkness. Yet, her fragile figure bore visible scars from the cruelty inflicted upon her, a haunting reminder of the merciless abuse she had endured. The man’s heart burned with indignation, wondering how anyone could be so cruel to an innocent child. With tender care, he gently brushed his fingers through her disheveled hair, silently promising to shield and safeguard her.

In that peaceful moment, a thought stirred within his heart, as he looked upon her sleeping form with a small smile, “Your face bears a resemblance to our missing princess…” he said, his voice laced with both optimism and conviction. As the muscular man gazed at the small, innocent face of the little girl, he couldn’t help but think about the pain and suffering she had likely experienced. As he dwelled on these thoughts, tears fell softly down his cheeks. Suddenly, the door opened and his friend Liam appeared, offering a comforting hand on his shoulder.

The two men embraced, as the strong man let his emotions out. Liam had always been his confidante and support system, having grown up with him like a brother. Both men had endured their own hardships. The strong man had come from an abusive home, but he still had his uncle to protect him. Liam, on the other hand, had been found as a young teenager, lost and alone in the forest by the strong man’s uncle, and was welcomed into their family.

As they held each other, the strong man looked back at the little girl, who had fainted. “Liam, please check on her,” he implored, concern etched on his face. Liam nodded, and went over to her with his medical supplies. But as he looked down and started his examination, he gasped in surprise – this was the same little girl he had saved from a dangerous car accident not too long ago!

He quickly turned to the strong man and told him that he had seen the girl before, by the west road. The strong man was stunned, but urged Liam to proceed with his examination, determined to uncover the truth about her condition. Together, they would care for her and ensure that she remained safe and protected from harm.

After examining the little girl, Liam’s heart was heavy with the weight of her condition. He turned towards the strong man named Aiden, and delivered the difficult news – despite the external signs of physical trauma, there was also significant internal bleeding. Aiden’s concern was palpable as he asked if the girl would be okay, but Liam could only give a disappointing answer. He advised that she needed to be observed closely through the night, and that they would have to admit her to his hospital the next day.

Aiden’s heart sank. The little girl had become an integral part of his life, akin to a daughter. The thought of leaving her side, alone and vulnerable, tore his spirit. He longed to envelop her in a comforting embrace and shield her from all the pain she had endured. But Liam, sensing Aiden’s exhaustion from his recent hard work as one of the most successful CEO, urged him to find respite on the couch. With weary eyes, Aiden kept a steady watch over the little girl he held so dear. As the night settled in, Aiden’s mind became a whirlwind of thoughts, lingering on the girl’s profound suffering. His own personal tragedies and struggles intertwined with the image of her fragile form, creating a tapestry of empathy and determination. Aiden had dedicated his life to upholding justice, diligently pursuing criminals and mafias across the world. Yet, at this moment, his focus shifted solely to this little girl and the profound desire to see her emerge unscathed from the depths of despair.

Meanwhile, Liam sat by her side, his countenance filled with a mixture of love, affection, and sadness. He couldn’t help but gaze at her with an unwavering determination to protect, embrace, and provide comfort in any way possible. The little girl’s presence resurrected memories of his own childhood and the tragic loss of his mother at the hands of his abusive father. Liam had been unable to save her, but he summoned the courage to escape the clutches of his father, who never expressed remorse for his hideous actions. It was an arduous journey for Liam, wandering the streets with tears staining his face, until the police intervened and placed him in an orphanage. Though his father was imprisoned for life, the cycle of hardships persisted. As a young and vulnerable six-year-old, Liam faced mistreatment in the orphanage, considered a burden for his inability to carry out tasks expected of someone older. The weight of his own experiences only deepened his empathy for the little girl lying before him.

However, amidst the darkness that enveloped Liam’s past, a glimmer of hope emerged at the age of eight when a kind-hearted woman adopted him. She bestowed upon him the love and care he had yearned for, treating him as her own flesh and blood. This experience instilled within Liam a steadfast belief in the power of compassion and nurture to mend the shattered lives of the innocent.

As the night wore on, Aiden succumbed to the depths of deep sleep, his thoughts still consumed by the girl’s anguish. Liam, on the other hand, remained vigilant, a guardian angel watching over her through the long hours ahead. The resolve burning within both of them testified to their unwavering dedication and determination to see the little girl emerge from her trials, like a phoenix reborn from the ashes.

Liam felt really sad when he thought about his step-mom, who he used to call Aunt Luna. He remembered a terrible day when bad guys attacked their big house. They were enemies of Liam’s step-mom. Liam got separated from his little step-sister and Aunt Luna that day. It was a scary scene. Liam saw Aunt Luna getting hurt badly and couldn’t find his step-sister. He thought everyone in his family was gone except him. Lost and crying in the woods, Liam met Aiden’s uncle, who took care of him from then on. Life got better, but he always missed his family – his real mom, Aunt Luna, his step-sister, and even the guards who protected them.

What Liam didn’t know was that Aunt Luna had a son who wasn’t there during the attack. He might still be alive, waiting to be found

Khushi stirred awake as the first gentle rays of sunlight kissed her face, returning her to consciousness. Opening her eyes, she found herself in a cozy and comfortable bed. A rush of confusion swept over her as she realized that her usual place of slumber, the dreary store room, was left behind. Bewildered, she glanced around the room, her heart pounding in her chest, fearing the worst – had she been kidnapped?

Overwhelmed by fear and a hazy memory of the previous night, Khushi’s emotions erupted, and she burst into loud cries. Amidst her tears, she noticed a tall figure standing by her side. Slowly, she focused her gaze on him, and there it was – a flicker of recognition. She remembered him – the stern-looking man with a strong, muscular frame she had encountered in the alley just last night. He had seemed quite intimidating to her, and those memories only intensified her tears.

He had initially frightened her with his tough appearance, causing her tears to flow once more.

Aiden, who had rarely interacted with children, felt at a loss in this unfamiliar situation, especially with a little girl like Khushi. He attempted to console her with kind and comforting words, but his worried expression seemed strangely amusing. The worried expression etched on his rugged face hinted at one thing: the criminals had seemingly triumphed over his team. However, this time, his concern wasn’t solely for his job. It was for the little girl, with whom he felt an inexplicable connection, as though it wasn’t even 24 hours since they met.

In a situation where every attempt to bring a smile to the little girl’s face had proven fruitless, he found himself at a loss. However, a burst of inspiration suddenly illuminated his mind with a brilliant idea. Without wasting a moment, he hurriedly made his way to his changing room, a place where transformation awaited.

Khushi, up until that point, had regarded Aiden as some sort of villainous figure, grappling with her own troubled thoughts and the hardships of her life. But in the midst of her contemplation, someone suddenly appeared before her. It was none other than Aiden himself, but now adorned in the most delightful unicorn costume. With the whimsical ensemble as his armor, he began to dance in a silly manner that defied convention. And oh, to his sheer surprise a smile stretched across her lips, growing wider with each passing moment. Laughter bubbled forth from the depths of her being, a spontaneous and pure expression of joy.

Aiden, keeping up the act of a unicorn, playfully placed a crown upon Khushi’s head and lifted her up, twirling her around as if she were a princess. The little girl revealed in this whimsical adventure, her imagination carrying her away to a world where she was a princess and Aiden, the tough guy, had become a magical unicorn. Aiden, despite his typically stoic demeanor, fully embraced the role, even getting down on his knees to become a horse ride for Khushi.

Their joyful escapade, however, was interrupted by the unexpected arrival of one of Aiden’s guards. This poor soul, witnessing his boss’s unexpected display of happiness, felt the very core of his being shaken. How could it be? Aiden, known for his stoicism and distant demeanor, now graced the room with an earnest smile. At first, it seemed like a dream, too incredible to believe. But soon, it became clear that this was no illusion. Aiden had been transformed by the power of delight, casting aside his stern facade to reveal a side he had concealed from the world.

As the guard stood captivated by his boss’s beaming grin, Liam interrupted him with a polite request to wait outside. Meanwhile, Aiden and the little girl were still engrossed in their imaginary world. Liam was taken aback by the guard’s unusual expression and curious to know what had caught his attention. Soon enough, Liam’s gaze landed on Aiden, who was still committed to his role as a fantastical unicorn. Liam couldn’t hold back his laughter, which resounded throughout the room. In response, Aiden gently placed Khushi back on the bed and approached Liam, lifting him onto his shoulders.

Turning toward the little one, Aiden inquired, “Princess, would you like to witness another magical sight?”

An air of instant anticipation enveloped Khushi as she nodded vigorously in response to Aiden’s question. With a mischievous glint in his eye, Aiden whisked Liam away to the changing room, locking him inside. A playful threat echoed through the door, voiced by none other than Aiden himself, “If you don’t want to face my mighty strength, then dress accordingly!” Liam had no choice but to comply, adhering to the whims of the elder among them. Meanwhile, Khushi’s curiosity piqued at the sight of Liam’s sudden disappearance, her eyes eagerly scanning the room.

Much to the amusement of all, Aiden came with, a box clasped in his hands, he had borrowed it from one of his maids. In a surprising turn of events, just then Liam emerged dressed as a princess, adding yet another layer of hilarity to the already jovial atmosphere. Taking charge, Aiden directed Liam to sit upon a chair, while handing Khushi the box. With a gentle smile, he uttered the words, “Little one, would you like to explore the world of makeup?” Khushi’s delight was palpable as she enthusiastically began adorning Liam’s face with various colors and shades. Aiden absorbed the scene before him, savoring every precious moment. Not contented with just makeup, he seized a wig and playfully placed it upon Liam’s head, eliciting even a more grumpy face from their newfound princess.

As Khushi grew more at ease in the presence of these two remarkable individuals, Aiden initiated a conversation by inquiring about her name. With the weight of her past momentarily lifted, Khushi replied in a soft and gentle voice, “Khushi.” A shared smile blossomed between the trio as they delved deeper, inquisitive about her life and experiences.

As Aiden continued to delve into Khushi’s family background and the reasons for her distressing circumstances of wandering the streets, Khushi found solace in their presence and began to share her painful story. Aiden and Liam, hearing her somber tale, were overwhelmed by a surge of anger and profound sadness, realizing the immense hardships this young girl had endured at such a tender age.

Sensitive to Khushi’s fragile emotions, Liam hesitated to pry too deeply into the subject of her biological family, fearing it may overwhelm her. However, driven by a genuine desire to understand her journey, he mustered the courage to gently inquire. As the question left his lips, Khushi’s eyes grew heavy with sadness, and her voice trembled, as if a weight had settled upon her throat but still she told them everything because even though Khushi met them just yesterday it felt as if she knew them from many years, Khushi began by recounting the joyous days she spent with her mother, a successful businesswoman. Their lives were filled with happiness, and her mother’s loving nature extended to adopting an older boy, who quickly became Khushi’s beloved step-brother. Their bond was unbreakable, and she cherished the memories of their closeness.

However, tragedy struck when a nefarious mafia gang targeted her mother’s thriving business. Khushi was just five years old when their lives turned upside down. The attack shook their world, leaving them in ruins. Amidst the chaos and destruction, a trusted guard helped Khushi escape, guiding her to safety. Sadly, her protector, her dear uncle, fell victim to a fatal wolf attack, leaving Khushi bereft of his comforting presence. Eventually, she was captured by a man named Mr. Amir, who held her captive, robbing her of her freedom.

In an attempt to convey the depth of her familial connections, Khushi shared a precious necklace given to her by her beloved step-brother. The necklace symbolized the love and bond they shared, serving as a reminder of the family she longed to reunite with. She then spoke of her older brother, who was studying abroad at the time of the tragic events. Despite the heart-wrenching circumstances, Khushi clung to the hope that he was still alive and she held an unwavering desire to find both of her brothers.

Liam was utterly astonished as he listened to Khushi’s story, finding striking parallels to his own experiences. The necklace she presented bore an uncanny resemblance to the one he had lovingly gifted his step-sister. Moreover, Khushi’s mother shared similarities with his own step-mother, Aunt Luna, who was a formidable businesswoman. The alarming encounter with a mafia gang, aiming to dismantle Aunt Luna’s business, mirrored the threats his own family had faced. As these connections unfolded, a poignant thought emerged in Liam’s mind – Khushi could very well be his long-lost step-sister. Overwhelmed with emotion, tears streamed down his cheeks at the mere possibility of this revelation. The fact that Khushi shared the same name as his lost step-sister only deepened the impact of this extraordinary discovery.

Meanwhile, Aiden felt shaken to his very core upon seeing Khushi’s necklace. It stirred a profound sense of familiarity, resonating with vivid memories he had encountered in his dreams. The necklace seemed to hold a mystifying connection to Aiden’s subconscious, leaving him unsettled. The convergence of the necklace and Khushi’s presence evoked a pervasive sense of destiny at play, surpassing the boundaries of mere coincidence. A tidal wave of unanswered questions flooded Aiden’s mind, urging him to uncover the enigmatic connection between his dreams and Khushi’s reality.

Amidst this whirlwind of revelation and realization, both Liam and Aiden found themselves grappling with a maelstrom of emotions. The uncanny parallels between their lives and Khushi’s hinted at a shared history, offering the promise of answers, healing, and a renewed sense of kinship. Tears flowed, and their souls trembled, burdened by the untrodden chapters of their intertwined lives. The possibilities that lay ahead flickered with trepidation and hope, beckoning them to embark on a transformative journey of discovery.

Khushi shared her haunting past with Liam and Aiden, but as she wrapped up the tale, she was struck by a terrible cough. It worsened as she began to cough up blood. Aiden and Liam were shaken, trying to help her but it was as if she couldn’t hear them. The next thing they knew, she had fainted. Aiden was distraught and quickly picked up the frail and delicate Khushi into his arms, rushing to the nearest hospital. Liam followed closely behind. After several nerve-wracking hours of waiting, the doctors informed them that Khushi’s condition had stabilized. But she remained unconscious. Liam and Aiden sat by Khushi’s side, anxiously worrying about her frail health and the other perplexing connection that troubled them. Both men shared an unwavering determination to protect Khushi from any harm.

The readers, are invited to latch onto this heartwarming tale, where the unexpected unfolds, barriers are shattered, and the human spirit embraces the joy that often hides in plain sight.
