Prayer
The sun is a relentless yellow ball. The sea is azure and calm. My mood, however, is dark grey if I were to pick a color for it. How much longer will I have to stick it out here all alone? I am an introvert – yes- but being stranded on a deserted island isn’t much fun! When will I be rescued? When will I hear the welcome sound of a chopper or an airplane? I’ve already written HELP on the sand by arranging stones in the shape of the letters that make up the word. But there is no one around to see it. I’ve read Robinson Crusoe in college and watched Castaway – the movie with Tom Hanks- but little did I expect to undergo the same experience the protagonists did. I go to my water source and drink a little water cupping the glorious liquid in my palms. I look up at the sky and pray. It’s funny I should pray now. I spent my entire life claiming to be agnostic. Now, I wanted to believe in a higher power. Nothing like adversity to get us all religious. There was a certain reassurance I felt when I prayed.
